Spike Noir

I wanted one of my Spike covers to be different than the painted style, so I did this. I think it works better as a black and white inked piece, but the color seems to complete the mood.

I love old detective films, and anything comic related that is done in a dark "noir" style.

My original idea was to have the black mass of crows be Spike's actual shadow ,cast by his cigarette, but in the end, the composition of it moves from left to right easier this way. I just flipped Spike around and added the stone wall. Not being his shadow, the crows still add a nice boarder to the image....I think.

Not so sure if I like this. I mean James Marsters is pretty much the most attractive actor on Buffy. Spike is supposed to be hot as hell. This drawing kinda made him ugly and thus very unSpike-like to me.

I think it's a great image - the work is all about mood, mystery and atmosphere - and the use of the ravens/crows works great. The Perfect bird symbol for the character. Plus, the lighting you use, always makes people look very different.
